California FAQs on Workforce Pay Data Reporting Requirements – On Feb. 1, 2024, the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) issued updated answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the state’s requirement for large employers to report information about their workforce from 2023.

California Law Makes It Easier for Employees to Establish Retaliation Claims – On Oct. 8, 2023, California enacted Senate Bill 497, also known as the Equal Pay and Anti-Retaliation Protection Act (the Act), which creates a rebuttable presumption of retaliation when an employee experiences an adverse employment action within 90 days of engaging in certain protected activity. The Act went into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

Illinois and Chicago Area Paid Leave Comparison Chart – Paid leave laws affecting Chicago-area employers underwent significant changes at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. The following chart compares key features of the Illinois statewide Paid Leave for All Workers Act, the Cook County Paid Leave Ordinance, and the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance. Oregon Issues Additional Paid Family and Medical Leave Rules – Oregon has issued 16 new administrative rules for its paid family and medical leave (PFML) program. The rules took effect Jan. 12 and concern appeals, assistance grants, benefits, confidentiality, equivalent plans and self-employment.

Texas Law Prohibits COVID-19 Vaccination Mandates – As of Feb. 6, 2024, a new Texas law prohibits all private employers in the state from adopting or enforcing any COVID-19 vaccination mandates for workers.
