Chicago Paid Leave Changes Delayed Until Jul 1, 2024 – The Chicago City Council has voted to delay a new law that will expand the city’s paid leave mandate to 40 hours of paid leave (PL) plus 40 hours of paid sick leave (PSL). The implementation has been delayed to July 1, 2024. Until the new law is effective in July, Chicago employees will continue to earn one hour of paid sick leave, not paid time off, for every 40 hours they work (or at least five days per year).
California New Law Requires Separation Notices and Allows Electronic Unemployment and Tax Notices – On Sept. 30, 2023, California enacted a new law, Assembly Bill (AB) 1355, that requires employers to immediately notify an employee, in writing, of any separation or other change in the employee’s relationship with the employer. AB 1355 also establishes a five-year period within which employers may email certain notices if they obtain written opt-in statements from employees. The new law is effective Jan. 1, 2024. California Employment Laws Effective Jan. 1, 2024 – In general, once approved by both the state legislature and the state governor, a new bill in California becomes effective on Jan. 1 of the following year (though some exceptions are possible for emergency measures and when the bills specifically appoint a different effective date). Massachusetts PFML 2024 Employee Notices Available – The Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave has published required 2024 paid family and medical leave (PFML) workplace posters, employee notices, and rate sheets.
