FORM I-9 UPDATES

At the Council for Global Immigration’s 2015 Symposium on June 10, 2015, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a new Form I-9 will soon be released that will include drop-down boxes and guides. The new Form I-9 will help employers avoid common errors.

It’s been over 2 years since the current version of Form I-9 was released by USCIS. Employers are required to complete Form I-9 to document verification of the identity and employment authorization of each new employee.

Newly hired employees must complete Section 1 no later than the first day of employment and not before the employee has accepted a job offer. Employers must complete Section 2 within three business days of the employee’s first day. The employer is required to physically (in-person) examine the original documents provided by the employee.

DO YOU PROVIDE A RETIREMENT PLAN TO YOUR EMPLOYEES?

Over 90% of employers offer a 401(k) plan, and the majority also offers a match. A total compensation package, including a robust 401(k) plan, helps attract and retain a talented workforce.

Sponsoring a 401(k) plan can be complicated and administratively burdensome. Just last month, the Supreme Court ruled that plan sponsors must continually monitor the plan’s investment lineup to ensure only suitable options are included.

Employco clients have access to a master 401(k) plan through Guardian Retirement Solutions. Participating companies can customize the plan while Employco handles the legal and administrative requirements. Contact us for more information.

AMERICA'S 239TH BIRTHDAY

The majority of employers (76%) plan to close operations in honor of Independence Day in 2015 while 60% plan to observe it on Friday, July 3 because the 4th falls on a Saturday this year (SHRM).

Although companies are not required to pay hourly/non-exempt employees for holidays, employers who do not pay salaried/exempt employees for holidays risk violating the Fair Labor Standards Act.

FUN FACT - Even though Congress declared July 4 a federal holiday in 1870, federal employees didn’t receive the 4th of July as a paid day off until 1938.
